ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- It's not your typical summer camp.
Outdoor Youth Days, organized by the Department of Fish and Game, is a summer program designed to teach children about outdoor safety through hands-on activities.
Tuesday's hands-on lesson was firearm safety.
Besides learning about different firearms, students also had the chance to test their aim at the Rabbit Creek Shooting Park.
The three-day camp also includes lessons about fishing ethics, archery, fly fishing and bear safety.
"We've shot shotguns and we've learned about bear safety and how to keep each other safe if you're in a group or alone and you encounter a bear in the wild," camper Tabitha Marley said.
The summer camp is the first of its kind in Southcentral Alaska and Fish and Game is looking to expand the program for next year.
