KENAI, Alaska (AP) - Clouds lifted to allow viewing of Mount Redoubt but scientists say seismic activity at the volcano continues to decline.
After weeks behind clouds, Redoubt made an appearance Friday. A plume of steam could be seen but U.S. Geological Survey geologist Chris Waythomas says that did not mean an eruption was in the works.
He says seismic activity has been the same for weeks -- gradually declining.
The cause of the steam was the thick, white blanket of freshly fallen snow.
He says the lava dome remains hot and as snow hits the dome, the snow and water boil off.
Redoubt's dome growth began in April after several explosive events that sent ash miles into the air.
