Blackhawk crash kills Fairbanks soldier in Iraq

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A 20-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks died from wounds suffered during a helicopter crash in Balad, Iraq, the Army said in a press release Monday.

Spc. Michael S. Cote, 20, worked on UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters, and he was in one that went down Saturday. The crash is being investigated, the Army said.

Cote, from Denham Springs, LA, was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, Task Force 49. He joined the Army in 2007 and moved to Alaska in March of 2008.

Next of kin have been notified.
