ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- In a championship devoid of big plays into the third quarter, Jamal Hale provided the back-breaker.
The Bartlett senior returned a punt 65 yards to help the Golden Bears pull away for an eventual 21-3 win over Chugiak to win the large schools state championship.
Hale also provided 94 yards on the ground. Fellow senior Cyrus Chenault added 40 yards.
Things started poorly for the Golden Bears as they fumbled on the second play of the game. But Chugiak could only muster a field goal.
Bartlett then put together a 14-play, 85-yard drive on the ensuing possession, capped off by Hale's 2-yard run.
Later in the first half the Mustangs came up with a goal line stand at their own 2. That led to a 16-play march down the field that ended in an interception inside the 10.
Chugiak went three and out to start the second half, and that's when Hale showcased the talent that's made him the all-time leading rusher in Golden Bears history.
The Mustangs couldn't stay out of their own way, turning the ball over four times.
Wilber Everett added the final score of the night with a leaping catch of a Willie Highlander pass in the fourth quarter.
The win is Bartlett's first state championship since 2002.
