ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Success inside and out was the theme of a conference Saturday at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center.
The idea is to give the women support and resources to avoid ending up behind bars again. There were classes for the inmates on how to prepare for a job interview, write a resume and dress appropriately for the workplace.
There was even a fashion show and a group session with former inmates who have succeeded outside of prison. The panelists talked about some of the challenges they faced after they got out, and how to create a new and successful life.
"We are aware that as they get out they are a lot of times afraid," said Alaska Supreme Court Justice Dana Fabe. "They don't know how to get housing, they don't know what kind of resources are available outside and they really want to succeed, but they don't know how."
Fabe says that although they don't have data to prove it, the program is successful and has been replicated in other correctional facilities.
