ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Three of Southcentral's leading utilities discussed the future of powering Southcentral Alaska at the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce's Make it Monday forum.
Chugach Electric Association, Municipal Light and Power and Matanuska Electric Association gave an industry update and discussed efforts to keep power flowing through the region.
MEA General Manager Joe Griffith also talked about the co-op's plans to build its own gas-fired generation plant.
MEA and Eklutna, Inc. recently signed a deal to build the plant in Eklutna.
Also, officials with Chugach Electric and Municipal Light and Power discussed their partnership to build a joint power plant on Chugach Electric property.
Both utilities say the new power plant will be much more energy-efficient.
"It's a precious resource, we need to use it wisely, and so the new power plant will only use about three-fourths of the gas that it takes to make a kilowatt hour compared to today's technology," said Phil Steyer with Chugach Electric.
Chugach Electric and ML&P's new power plant is expected to be up and running by 2013.
