ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A plan that puts a large area of the Arctic off-limits to commercial fishing goes into effect Dec. 3.
The Arctic Fishery Management Plan is being put in place because of changes that have occurred in the Arctic with global warming and the loss of sea ice. It was feared that the loss of sea ice would open up areas of the Arctic where previously there had been no commercial fishing.
The North Pacific Fishery Management Council began considering management options three years ago. The council decided to take a precautionary approach. It voted to prohibit commercial fishing until more is known about the Arctic marine environment.
