ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The White House announced Wednesday that President Barack Obama has nominated former APD chief Robert Heun to be Alaska's next U.S. Marshal.
Heun's name was forwarded by Sen. Mark Begich.
Heun joined APD in 1983 after leaving the Army and rose through the ranks to chief while Begich was mayor. He retired from the department in August and has been enjoying his time off at his family's lodge.
Reached by phone in the Valley, Heun said he was pleased to hear of the nomination.
"I was cleaning my cellar, my wife is down in Juneau and I promised I'd have the cellar cleaned before she got back and the phone rang, it was Begich's office and they told me that today the president was putting my name forward with someone else for the marshal job, mine for the marshal in Alaska so that was good news," Heun said.
Heun's nomination now goes to the Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration before heading to the full Senate for confirmation.
