Obama to stop in Alaska Thursday on way to Asia

by The Associated Press
Friday, November 6, 2009

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama will visit Alaska next week, as he begins a longer trip to Japan, China, South Korea and Singapore.

The White House says Obama will stop Thursday at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage to refuel Air Force One. He was scheduled to visit Wednesday, but will be delayed a day to visit Fort Hood in Texas after last Thursday's shootings there. Obama will mark the Veterans Day holiday with military personnel at the base.

The announcement came a day after Obama joked at the Tribal Nations Conference he would love to visit Alaska -- but in the summer.

The visit will be Obama's first trip ever to Alaska. He never made it to the 49th state during the 2008 campaign.
