Fort Richardson soldier killed by insurgents in Afghanistan

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A Fort Richardson soldier has died in Afghanistan.

Spc. Julian L. Berisford of Benwood, W.Va., died Wednesday in Paktika Province from wounds sustained from small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

Berisford was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division.

Berisford joined the Army in August 2007 and served at Fort Benning, Ga., and Fort Bragg, N.C., before being assigned to the Airborne Brigade at Fort Richardson in August 2008.

The brigade deployed to Afghanistan in February and March 2009.
