ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The state legislature is sending more federal stimulus dollars across the state.
Friday morning a committee allocated funds for nearly a dozen programs.
Among them: State vaccination programs, wildfire prevention projects, and local road construction in King Cove.
The biggest chunk, nearly $24 million will help pay for construction of a new airport in the community of Akutan in the Aleutian Chain.
Right now Akutan is served by a single World War II-era amphibious airplane and bad weather means the service is often cancelled.
"This will benefit them from safety, say someone has a health issue, they'll be able to get an aircraft in there, service for the fishing industry to haul parts and equipment and men and materials in there," said Leo von Scheben with the Department of Transportation.
The Department of Transportation says it expects airport construction to start in the spring.
