ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- An Alaska Army National Guardsman serving in Afghanistan is being recognized as one of the top 40 Native American professionals in the country.
The National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development chose Maj. Wayne Don because of his contributions to his tribe and community.
Don is embedded with the Mongolian Expeditionary Force, serving as a tactical advisor for base security in Afghanistan.
Part of his mission is to strengthen ties between the United States and Mongolia.
"It's truly exciting. Alaska has a lot of similarities with Mongolia. We both rely on resources. Similar size, similar climate, similar population. Here you have an Alaska Native that's stepping forward to help develop that relationship," said Col. Tim Dehaas, Chief of Staff of the Alaska Army National Guard.
Don is originally from the Western Alaska village of Mekoryuk, where he serves as chairman of his village corporation.
He has also been named as one of Alaska's Top 40 Under 40, an award his children will accept on his behalf in January.
