ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The Anchorage Assembly began to discuss a new 20-year bicycle plan at its weekly work session Friday. The proposal aims to make bicycling in Anchorage safer and more practical, even in the winter.

Assembly member Sheila Selkregg says the plan doesn't address the growing number of bikers who use city roads to commute in the winter.

"So I'm hoping there will be a maintenance strategy that really addresses clearing those bike trails on the road," Selkregg said. "So we don't have that person we've all seen in the middle of the winter driving down in the middle of the road with a big line of cars behind them."

Assembly Member Debbie Ossiander says the bicycle plan doesn't address Eagle River's needs. She says she's heard from constituents who want to be able to commute to Anchorage, and others bicycle enthusiasts who want to be able to ride all the way from Anchorage to Eklutna.

The plan will be up for public comment at Tuesday's Assembly meeting.
