ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The Alaska Zoo board of directors will hold a special meeting next Tuesday to discuss whether Maggie the elephant should remain in state or be moved to the Lower 48.
Twice last week Maggie was unable to get up after lying down.
Last night, the Anchorage Assembly passed a resolution asking the Zoo to make a decision on Maggie soon.
The Zoo also received a letter from Hollywood filmmaker Richard Donner, who produced the film "Free Willy," and is considering a film about Alaska's infamous elephant.
Donner writes, "We feel compelled to reveal the injustices that are being visited upon this elephant ... and when we depict it, we will not hesitate to spare the reality of the situation as we see it and use the Zoo's policy as the villain in a forthcoming film."
Zoo Director Pat Lampi says Maggie's future will be based on facts, not threats.
The board of directors is accepting public comments on Maggie's future prior to its special meeting next week. It is receiving e-mails on the subject at directors@alaskazoo.org
