ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A new law goes into effect today.

It's called the "Move Over Law" and it is meant to help protect law enforcement officers when pulling over cars on Alaska's roadways.

Alaska State Troopers say several officers in Alaska have been severely injured while conducting routine traffic stops.

Under the new law, Alaska drivers traveling on a highway with two or more lanes in the same direction are now required to change lanes if possible in existing safety and traffic conditions.

If it is not possible for the driver to change lanes, they must slow to a reasonable and prudent speed. If the highway has less than two lanes the driver must slow to a reasonable and prudent speed.

Violators face two points on their insurance and a $150 fine.
