ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska law enforcement officers are taking to the skies to catch dangerous drivers on the highways. It's a first this Fourth of July weekend and drivers can't help but notice the increased enforcement both on the roads and in the air.
Alaska State Troopers and Anchorage police are teaming up to ticket any aggressive drivers, as well as those driving under the influence, not wearing safety belts or driving without their headlights on.
"It's pretty simple. We don't want to see any crashes that result in bad injuries and we certainly don't want to see any fatalities. And our hope is by doing this we'll provide a safer way for everybody," said Lt. Nancy Reeder, Anchorage Police Department.
"Definitely more than on our way down Monday. A lot more than our way down Monday," said Matt Makoid, visiting from Philadelphia.
"Quite a bit more state troopers, couple of accidents," said Hiram Hernandez, an Anchorage resident.
Tickets in safety corridors are doubled and could cost some drivers more than $1,000 in fines.
The aerial traffic enforcement will be in place through Sunday.
