ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- John Bitney, Gov. Sarah Palin's legislative director, resigned yesterday.
Palin's staff described his resignation as "amicable."
Bitney, a former lobbyist, could return to his old job, despite a new ethics law that expands a one-year ban on lobbying by former members of the executive branch.
A spokeswoman for the governor says Bitney and Palin mutually agreed he would leave his post for personal reasons.
Bitney helped spearhead Palin's Alaska Gasline Inducement Act, which lawmakers passed this May. He also oversaw the governor's bill on ethics reform, signed into law yesterday by Palin.
Christopher Clark, who was deputy legislative director, will take over Bitney's job as acting legislative director until Palin chooses a permanent successor.
