ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska Congressman Don Young has decided to pay back excess campaign contributions he claimed earlier in the year were beyond statutes of limitation.
Earlier this summer, the Alaskans for Don Young campaign filed a report with the Federal Elections Commission saying it unknowingly accepted illegal contributions from a seafood processor for the past seven years.
The campaign said Pacific Seafood Processors Association had donated in-kind contributions to Young's annual Washington, D.C. crab feed fundraiser dating back to 2000.
In June, the campaign said it would refund about $2,400, covering the years 2004 and later, but that donations preceding 2004 were beyond the FEC statutes of limitation.
Late this week, Alaskans for Young disclosed it has since made a second payment to Pacific Seafoods in the amount of $3,175 to cover contributions made between 2000 and 2004.
Young's campaign declined to comment on why it reversed its earlier decision on the matter.
