ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A rabbit hunter on Kodiak Island shot a charging grizzly bear.
Officials with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game say the sow later had to be killed along with her three cubs because, officers say, they would not have survived the winter.
The encounter happened Friday near the American River about 15 miles outside of Kodiak.
Biologists say it's unusual to have a female bear not in its den this time of year. This year, the island's berry crop was poor and the bear was likely still out looking for food.
