ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Conoco Phillips made its largest single donation ever in Alaska Thursday, benefiting the New Providence Cancer Center.

The oil company donated $5 million toward the new facility, which will offer Alaskans in-state care throughout their treatment.

This donation is one of the largest single donations made worldwide by the company, according to its executives.

President Jim Bowles said the donation was made after talking to Providence Medical Center Alaska CEO Al Parrish about cancer's impact on all Alaskans.

"He told us one out of every three Alaskans are touched by cancer," Bowles said. "That message alone really brought that to the top of our list as far as worthy causes."

The new Providence Cancer Center will have its grand opening ceremony this weekend.
