ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- It hasn't happened often in Alaska's 50-year history, but a presidential campaign is now officially under way in the state.

Democrat Barack Obama opened an office in Midtown Anchorage last week. Staffers say they soon will have addresses in Fairbanks, Juneau and the Mat-Su Valley, as well.

Recent polls have shown Obama close to presumptive Republican nominee John McCain in Alaska and Obama's Alaska spokesman says they hope to turn a red state blue.

"We will have a major presence in Alaska from now until November," Jeff Giertz said. "The campaign is treating Alaska like a swing state, which is a treatment I don't think Alaska has received a lot of before."

The last -- and only -- Democrat to take Alaska in a presidential race was Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
