ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- An Eagle River man fought off a bear early Monday morning and lived to tell about it.
Devon Rees, 18, said he was walking home along VFW Road next to Meadow Creek at about 2 a.m. when a brown bear came out of the woods and attacked him.
Rees said he was able to fight the bear off, but not before the animal got some good swipes in.
Rees has puncture wounds in his arm and both his legs.
"I believe there's a couple of bites, but nothing too serious," Rees said. "Like it bit, but it didn't latch on. It just like bit and was like just trying to stop me, trying, I guess, to immobilize me or hurt me enough to where I wouldn't move."
"But I wasn't letting that happen," Rees said. "I wasn't going to sit still and let a bear just eat me."
Rees said the fight lasted less than a minute, stopping once he got back onto VFW Road.
The Department of Fish and Game said Meadow Creek has a small salmon run and is a popular area for brown bears.
