Palin heading to Georgia to stump for Senate candidate

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin is going into campaign mode again next week.

On Monday Palin will be in Georgia campaigning for Sen. Saxby Chambliss, who is in a runoff race.

Palin will join Chambliss for four public rallies on the eve of the election.

The runoff between Chambliss and Democrat Jim Martin could determine whether Democrats win a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. The Minnesota race between Sen. Norm Coleman and Al Franken has gone to a recount and will also factor in.

During her vice presidential bid, Palin proved how popular she can be on the campaign trail, drawing large crowds. And the Chambliss campaign is expecting thousands to turn out for her this time as well.

"The McCain-Palin ticket won in Georgia," Chambliss campaign spokesperson Michelle Grasso said in a phone interview. "You can see how very popular she is and part of the goal in a runoff is to get those same voters out to the polls again."

Palin said getting Chambliss re-elected would benefit Alaska.

"It's important to Alaska that there are more voices in the United States Senate that will allow Alaska to get out and develop and start reaching our potential," she said.

From Georgia, Palin will travel to Philadelphia where governors from across the country are gathering for a meeting with President-elect Barack Obama.

Palin says she looks forward to speaking with Obama about the importance of Alaska energy projects.
