ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Young lobbyists are at work in Anchorage, as 35 students from Polaris school testified via telephone for the State Affairs Committee in Juneau Wednesday morning.

The kids are lobbying to make the Alaskan malamute the official state dog.

In the process, they're learning about state symbols and state government.

The students learned that if the bill passes, Alaska will not be the only state with a state dog.

"At least nine other states have them and it's a good way to learn things about our state history," student Caleena Shafer said.

The State Affairs Committee approved the bill, and it will now move for a vote in the House of Representatives.
