Native contracts increase tenfold over past eight years

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Native Corporation contract awards have increased tenfold over the past eight years.

U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., released preliminary data in the Senate subcommittee's investigation into Native corporation contracting.

The Contracting Oversight Committee says federal government contracts for Native corporations increased dramatically while at the same time the corporations received a disproportionate amount of small business loans.

Native corporations have come under criticism because of a federal law that exempts them from small business contracting rules, which allows them to qualify for large contracts without the normal bidding process.

The Senate subcommittee will hold a hearing on the contracting investigation July 16.
