Mitch Sego (October 19, 2010) |
In February 2011, Mitch became the first and only broadcast meteorologist in Alaska to be designated as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM). This title is given to those with a physics/calculus-based education who have passed an extensive written exam and critique of on-air work. Mitch is honored by this recognition and honored to share his knowledge with the public.
When Mitch came to Alaska in 2007, he thought, like many, that he would enjoy an out-of-the-ordinary life for a few years, and then head back south. Instead, he fell madly in love, first with Alaska, and then, a year later, with his beautiful wife, Natalie. In October 2010, they welcomed their first child, Charlotte, into the world. About the time of his daughter’s birth, Mitch joined the Morning Edition.
Mitch was born and raised near Albuquerque, New Mexico. After high school, he left to serve a two-year mission for his church in Vina del Mar, Chile. To this day, he deeply loves the Latin culture and peoples and has managed to keep up his fluency in Spanish. Mitch graduated from one of the world’s premier severe weather research colleges, the University of Oklahoma, with a BS degree from the School of Atmospheric Science in Meteorology and minors in Broadcast Journalism and Spanish. His original plan was to work in research or pursue a Masters, but when the opportunity came to work in TV and move to Alaska, he decided to take it. He started at KTVA in Anchorage before moving to KTUU.
Forecasting is one of Mitch’s greatest passions. He has held a fascination with weather since he was a little boy. He is the only TV meteorologist in Alaska with a science/math-based education. In fact, it was his interest in mathematics that helped fuel his desire to study and more deeply understand atmospheric processes.
Mitch is a big fan of staying active. He grew up playing soccer, tennis, basketball, golf, and racquetball. He also skis (both Nordic and Alpine). He loves to walk the trails around Anchorage, hang out on the coast, and camp out. He also loves to spend time exploring Alaska, like kayaking in Whittier, hiking in the Chugach Mountains, and sightseeing in Homer or Seward. He is active in church and community service. His family and his faith are of upmost importance to him. There is nothing he loves more than spending time with his wife and baby.
Mitch is up early with Sheila and Todd weekday mornings on the Morning Edition. If you have any ideas or comments for him, e-mail Mitch: msego@ktuu.com.
Where is Mitch? I miss having him on the morning news. I have been watching the early edition for some time now and find him to be very pleasant to learn the daily weather from. He also has a way of explaining the weather and how meteorologists come to read the weather without being pretentious, confusing, or boring. I hope this family friendly news caster is simply on vacation and has not left the mornig news. Please let the other morning news casters let us know when to expect him back.
Thank you!
