The first black pitcher to win a World Series game, the 28-year-old rookie spun a six-hitter as the <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PLGEO100100802010000" title="Brooklyn (New York City)" href="/topic/us/new-york/new-york-city/brooklyn-%28new-york-city%29-PLGEO100100802010000.topic">Brooklyn</a> <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORSPT000015" title="Los Angeles Dodgers" href="/topic/sports/baseball/los-angeles-dodgers-ORSPT000015.topic">Dodgers</a> beat the <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORSPT000205" title="New York Yankees" href="/topic/sports/baseball/new-york-yankees-ORSPT000205.topic">New York Yankees</a>, 4-2,  in the 1952 Series opener. Black attended <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="OREDU0000128" title="Morgan State University" href="/topic/education/colleges-universities/morgan-state-university-OREDU0000128.topic">Morgan State</a>, earning Negro College All America honors in football. He also starred for the Baltimore Elite <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORSPT000025" title="San Francisco Giants" href="/topic/sports/baseball/san-francisco-giants-ORSPT000025.topic">Giants</a> before joining Brooklyn, where he went 15-4 with 15 saves and won <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="EVSPR000089" title="MLB Rookie of the Year Award" href="/topic/sports/baseball/mlb-rookie-of-the-year-award-EVSPR000089.topic">National League Rookie of the Year</a>.

Black attended Morgan State, earning Negro College All America honors in football. He also starred for the Baltimore Elite Giants before joining Brooklyn, where he went 15-4 with 15 saves and won National League Rookie of the Year.
