( Baltimore Sun photo by Hans Marx / December 7, 1952 ) As a Maryland sophomore, he christened Byrd Stadium, scoring the first touchdown there in 1950. Scarbath would blossom into an All-America quarterback and Heisman Trophy runner-up who led the Terps to a 28-13 Sugar Bowl upset of No. 1 Tennessee in January 1952. The Poly grad set nine school records at Maryland, scored 35 TDs, won 24 of 29 games and was a No. 1 draft pick of the Washington Redskins, third overall. |
