( Frank A. Gardina, Baltimore Sun / July 23, 2004 ) Named for a World War I-era Army flight surgeon, Fort Detrick, near Frederick in Western Maryland, has long been a center for the U.S. military's biological weapons research. The area's largest employer, it is currently home to the Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. --Chris Kaltenbach |
