Buckingham fountain, 1935

<a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PLTRA000099" title="Buckingham Fountain" href="/topic/arts-culture/architecture/buckingham-fountain-PLTRA000099.topic">Buckingham Fountain</a>, shown in 1935, was built in 1927 with $500,000 donated by Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother Clarence, a director of the Art Institute. The fountain is modeled on one at Versailles, except that, in true Chicago fashion, it is twice as big.
