A few months back, country singer/humorist/Jewish cowboy Kinky Friedman wrote something nice about Texas Gov.-turned-presidential candidate Rick Perry. Because Friedman had run against Perry in a bitterly fought 2006 gubernatorial campaign (he ran as an independent and got 12 percent of the vote), this became a big deal, something that made Kinky unhappy. Even before his gubernatorial run, Friedman was a legend ¿ a Frank Zappa-like country singer with a string of smart, proudly un-politically correct almost-hits (e.g., "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven And Your Buns in the Bed") and, more recently, a columnist and detective novelist. In his spare time, Friedman does work for Utopia Rescue Ranch, the animal shelter he co-founded (utopiarescue.com), and tours almost nonstop. At his Wednesday night show at SPACE in Evanston, part of his ongoing "Hanukkah Tour," he'll sing, read and hang around to sign books afterward. "I'll sign anything but bad legislation," he promises. |
