When you get a puppy, they suggest you put on a classical music station. The music is pretty, the announcers have that "It's OK, just go to sleep" quality that Fido likes.
If you see a fellow at the dog park doing laps around the other dogs, barking and playing fetch by making the person chase the stick-carrying dog, that puppy probably was raised on Volcano! The exclamation point is part of the band's name, and it should be. Because this ensemble bangs out a sonic crazy quilt of changing time signatures, guitars that shift from power chords to pizzicato plucks on a dime, hyperkinetic drumming and a yelping, sighing, sometimes-falsetto vocalist. It sounds like it's as if a toddler got hold of the "Rock Band" game controller and started doing everything with it.
Volcano! might well be the most indie band in America. If there were Indie Awards, presented to bands that make even prototypical hipsters say "Man them boys is indie," it's Volcano!.
