( Tribune archive photo / August 10, 1996 ) An ebullient Mayor Richard Daley, Grand Marshall for the Bud Billiken parade, rides down Martin Luther King Drive in Chicago, greeting parade watchers. The parade, a community favorite, was created by Chicago Defender founder Robert S. Abbott in 1929 as a treat for his newspaper delivery boys. It has turned into one of the largest parades in the country, and certainly the largest African-American event of its kind. |
