The parade, a community favorite, was created by Chicago Defender founder <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PEBSL000037" title="Robert S. Abbott" href="/topic/economy-business-finance/media-industry/newspaper-magazine/robert-s.-abbott-PEBSL000037.topic">Robert S. Abbott</a> in 1929 as a treat for his newspaper delivery boys. It has turned into one of the largest parades in the country, and certainly the largest African-American event of its kind.

It has turned into one of the largest parades in the country, and certainly the largest African-American event of its kind.
