( Chris Walker, Chicago Tribune ) Designed by Sinan, Turkey's greatest architect, this mosque was begun in 1549 and completed in 1557. It was built at the command of Suleiman I, sultan of Turkey 1520-1566, under whose reign Vienna was unsuccessfully besieged in 1529. |
