Police reflect on prevention of fentanyl overdoses

WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) — It's a drug the Waynesboro Police say is here in the valley: Fentanyl.

Captain Kelly Walker, with the Waynesboro Police Department, said it's something they have encountered many times.

"We've executed several search warrants where Fentanyl has been discovered," said Walker.

The drug is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and 30 to 50 times more powerful than heroin. Just a few granules of the powder can kill.

The Waynesboro Police Department said they have been incredibly careful, since they have investigated Fentanyl cases as recent as January, when the drug was found at the scene of a fatal double overdose.

Captain Walker said they come prepared.

"We have everything from gloving up and in some cases, before officers will enter a scene, they'll put on a complete Tyvek suit and breathing apparatus, because it can also be inhaled, especially in powdered form," said Walker.
