ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) Both the Alaska Youth Philharmonic and the Youth Symphony played the final notes of the Alaska Youth Orchestras 2016-2017 season Saturday night.
The crowd filled with several hundred people included orchestra alumni, conductors, friends and family members.
The orchestras are not a part of the Anchorage School district but are made up of high school students who audition to join the groups.
“They're part of our cultural landscape in the city. Music is of course important to the heart and to the soul and just the vibrancy like a community in Anchorage,” Alaska Youth Orchestras board President Tanguy Libbrecht said.
Several of the musicians will continue their musical careers in the Anchorage Symphony or the Civic Orchestra, according to Libbrecht.
The orchestras will hold auditions for the 2017-2018 season later this month.
Libbrecht said rehearsals are set to begin in August and the first performance in a 3-part concert series is scheduled for December.
