ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - An officer with the Anchorage Police Department has received the Medal of Valor for saving a man from a burning vehicle in 2016. Officer Mitchel Veenstra led a group of people “who lifted the vehicle up far enough to free the man,” said APD.

Officer Veenstra received his medal from the new chief of the APD, Chief Justin Doll. Officer Veenstra’s act of heroism was recorded in a dashcam video that went viral. The video shows how the man was able to escape only seconds before the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
