Neighbor says crime concerns her after deadly shooting

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Original Story - Dec. 4, 2017, 9:30 p.m.:
Michelle Shangin, a neighbor who lives next door to where Saturday night's shooting occurred, along East 6th Avenue and Oklahoma Street, said she heard the gunshots.

Anchorage neighbor Michelle Shangin says she is worried about the crime in her community.

"It's kind of sad, because it's now common where every weekend there's gunshots," Shangin said. "And it's just heartbreaking to find out that one of these gunshots has taken the life of a young man."

Anchorage police identified the victim as 20-year-old Brandon Irlmeier.

Shangin says crime right outside her door is something she sees too often.

"I have seen assaults – drug deals – that happen down the street. Summertime, well any time of the year, there have been kids playing, and an hour later there has been a shooting," she said.

Following Saturday's shooting, approximately 24 hours later, another young victim, 26-year-old Joshua Statham, was fatally shot in a seemingly unrelated case across town, according to police.

At this time, the Anchorage Police Department says both of these homicide cases are still under investigation.
