Anchorage officials seeks to reduce vehicle thefts by amending joy riding offense

Anchorage (KTUU) In an effort to reduce the number of vehicle thefts, the Anchorage Assembly amended the offense for someone riding in the stolen car.

On Tuesday Assembly members unanimously approved the change from criminal mischief to criminal negligence, an offense that may be easier to establish in court.

The ordinance was introduced at the request of Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz and had the support of Justin Doll, Chief of Police.

The city says they have had four successful convictions since 2014 under the current rules despite 35 citations being referred for prosecution.
