WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) takes the stand. The nominee for attorney general testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday for the first of a two-day hearing. Sessions faced intense questioning from both sides of the aisle.
Congresswoman Roby (R-AL) says the accusations against Senator Sessions (R-AL) are completely unfounded and unfair.
He took his oath then fireworks erupted during his opening statement.
Protesters were on hand throughout the day, interrupting President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general. Democrats on the committee weren’t making his day any easier.
"You stated at a hearing that you're not sure that women or people of different sexual orientations face that kind of discrimination," said Senator Pat Leahy (D-VM). "And then you said I just don't see it."
"During the course of this boisterous political campaign, did you ever chant ‘lock her up?'" said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).
Senator Dianne Feinstein reminded Sessions that he "referred to Roe v. Wade as ‘one of the worst, colossally erroneous Supreme Court decisions of all time.’"
Throughout the day, Sessions denied accusations painting him as a racist
and that he is against protecting women from sexual assault.
"I hope my tenure in this body has shown you that the caricature that was created of me was not accurate," said Sessions.
Congresswoman Martha Roby (R-AL) says she believes this depiction of Sessions is indeed false. She says the claims against the Senator are completely unfair and unfounded.
"I have no reservations about Jeff Sessions being attorney general," said Roby. "He is the most qualified. I cannot think of anyone who would serve our country better than Jeff Sessions."
Roby says Sessions in the AG’s office would be a great thing for their home state.
"He has been a strong conservative senator advocating on behalf of the things that Alabamians care about and that are important to Alabama," said Roby.
The hearing continues Wednesday, with testimony from other witnesses expected throughout the day.
