ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - After five years of fundraising and work, Abbott Loop Community Church broke ground on its new auditorium Sunday.
In March 2012, the roof collapsed under the weight of snow. According to Senior Pastor Josh Tanner it was a miracle no one was inside and died.
On a typical Friday night, the worship team would've been inside practicing but on that night the team was delayed. "We believe that was really by the grace of God because if they were in here about 30 minutes earlier they would've been dead," said Tanner.
"The sound guy had his hand on the door," he said.
Over the next month, the church will prepare and once the weather is good enough to begin, crews will excavate the concrete.
The first phase of construction is expected to be completed by the end of summer.
The total project is expected to cost around $4.5 million. An end date has not been scheduled because it will take more fundraising efforts to raise all the money to complete the new auditorium.
The new building will hold up to 1,000 people and the church hopes to let the community use it for events.
