Driver killed in head-on crash, going wrong way with no headlights, police say

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Late Thursday night, concerned drivers on the Glenn Highway reported seeing a vehicle driving the wrong way with no headlights on. Police confirmed this morning that the driver of that vehicle is dead.

According to police, the man was driving a 4-door sedan against oncoming traffic. That car was driving in the wrong lanes for some time before it collided with a pick-up truck head-on, rebounded, and then was struck by another car.

Police say the driver was killed, and the two passengers in the truck were transported to a hospital for what police called "non-life threatening injuries." The occupants of the car that was hit second were not injured, police say.

As for the cause, police say they are still investigating what led to the crash. "We still don't know if drugs or alcohol were a factor, that much is being investigated right now," said MJ Thim, APD spokesperson.

The driver has not been identified either, according to Thim. "We're still working on notifying the next of kin," Thim said.

In a community alert, APD said the stretch of highway near the North Birchwood exit was closed for roughly 5 hours due to the large amount of debris scattered on the highway. It re-opened at around 4:30 a.m. Friday morning.
