ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) The Alaska Division of Forestry is accepting applications for firefighters ahead of the 2017 season.
To apply you must be 18 years or older, be in good shape, get a red card and pass a physical.
"We are looking for aggressive people in good shape, willing to live in the wild land for months at a time," said Fire Prevention Officer Ethan Eley of the Mat-Su area.
During April, applicants must complete a five-day course in order to get their red card. The course includes classroom work and field training. Once the red card course is completed, then applicants must get 80 hours of training before they are put on the fire lines.
Eley says a typical Alaska fire season starts on April 1 and goes until August 31, depending on conditions. After that firefighters might head down to the lower 48 to help with fires in Washington or California.
