New App encourages kids to explore Chugach National Park

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) Combining adventure, the outdoors, and your smart phone today the app Agents of Discovery was launched at Chugach National Park.

The app is family friendly and is geared towards teaching kids the importance of getting outside and exploring, officials said.

Players walk along Williwaw Loop Trail, a one and a half mile stretch through forest, along rivers, and through some marshy areas.

"The great thing about an app like this is it is mixing screen time and green time. Which we are trying to get more people involved in natural spaces and away from computers, games, or TVs and just out enjoying their public land," says Emily Long, Resource Assistant for A Kid Every Park.

Along the way there are ego-challenges and multiple choice questions that quiz kids about the environment and wilderness safety.

Once players have completed all of the challenges they can head to the Begich, Boggs Visitors Center to claim their reward.

Forest Officials say it's best to download the app before arriving at the park because there is limited or no service available.
