ANCHORAGE, AK (KTUU) Curling. It's that winter sport that makes everyone go, "the one with the brooms, right?" The goal of curling is to have more rocks or stones in the bullseye than the other team. With that in mind and the help of the Anchorage Curling Club, I decided to see just how hard this sport could be.
Anchorage Curling Club's Drew Dekreon says to try to relax the first time you try curling.
"Trust yourself, trust yourself coming off the hacks, you won't fall more than an inch or so," Dekreon said.
Curling is about, grace, form and precision.
"There is some technique to it," said Dekreon with a smile.
I was none of those things the first time I tried it.
But once I stopped overthinking, I got the hang of it.
Now throwing the rock? A different story entirely.
Dekreon says when the skip directs where he wants the rock, he'll point you at him. That's in part because he's accommodating for the rock to curl away from him.
I learned that throwing the rock takes a lot of technique and sweeping is a workout in itself.
