ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The Alaska Nanooks named a new head coach for the women's basketball team Tuesday.
Kerri Nakamoto will lead the Nanooks for the 2018-2019 season, replacing interim head coach Brett Sawyer. Nakamoto has been the head coach for Div. II California State University at Monterey Bay since 2013. There, she amassed a record of 38-96 overall, the third-highest in Otters' history.
Nakamoto spent eight years at Div. I California Polytechnic State University, where she was the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the women's basketball team as she finished her master's degree in education-school counseling.
She played four years of Div. I ball at University of San Diego, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology in 2003.
“We are so excited to have Kerri join the Nanook family and serve as our women’s basketball head coach next season,” UAF's interim athletic director Kayne Gutierrez said. “She has the energy and determination to keep this program moving forward. We are all looking forward to working alongside her and seeing the new direction women’s basketball is headed.”
The Nanook women had a 4-22 overall record last season.
