WASILLA, Alaska (KTUU) - A brand new coffee stand in the Mat-Su Valley is selling drinks infused with cannabidoil, or CBD. The owners say their business is about far more than a unique approach to coffee.
Matanuska Thunder Cup on Knik Goose Bay Road opened less than two weeks ago, but owners Tim and Petra Boles say their coffee has already been hugely popular.
“So far it's been quite the turnout and everyone is enjoying our drinks,” Tim said.
CBD is a compound found in cannabis. However, unlike THC, it does not have any psychotropic effects and is believed to have several medicinal benefits.
“It's basically a vitamin,” Tim said. “Your body already produces cannabidoil. Basically what we're doing is a supplement because your body does not produce enough.”
Boles believes CBDs can also help people struggling with alcoholism or addiction, an issue that he says is near and dear to his heart.
“The whole purpose of starting this business is I've lost both my siblings to opioid-based drugs and I'm trying to make a dent in the crisis that is going on in this country, in this city, in this state,” he said. “That's what we're all about is helping people.”
