Anchorage (KTUU) — Construction is underway on portions of the Mall at Sears for an unnamed tenant according to officials with the mall, who say that polling data has indicated that consumers would prefer to see a sports retail shop occupy the upgraded portion of the property.
"When we looked at the general population and our own shoppers we did a general intercept and a telephone study; the outdoor recreation outdoor clothing type places scored very high," said Linda Boggs, Marketing Director for the Mall at Sears.
While Boggs declined to reveal the new tenant, she did confirm that there is one of a handful of prospects that could soon cement their rights to the property. While other stores have come and gone, polling data suggests that the location is a hot spot.
"One of the things in that study was like 88% of Anchorage was driving by that shopping center every week, and the average is five times, so it is the most viable retail option for Anchorage," said Boggs.
However, high traffic and visibility don't ensure high sales. Officials with REI have revealed that they are in the process of looking to relocate in the near future. However, they would not confirm or deny that they are considering moving to the Mall at Sears.
