Overdue hunters rescued from Icy Straits Saturday

HOONAH, Alaska (KTUU) Alaska Wildlife troopers and volunteers searched Icy Straits near Hoonah Saturday for two overdue hunters.

According to a daily dispatch posted by AST, the two people were stranded in a 22-foot Boston Whaler.Troopers said the boat’s motor quit, “Their vessel was soon partially swamped as the seas and wind begin to build with the rising tide. Without basic survival gear on hand, one of the stranded party members who was soaking wet, displayed early signs of hypothermia.”

Troopers wrote the two people had only cellphones, which quit working as their sole form of communication with the search and rescue team. Both hunters and the boat were located and taken back to Hoonah.

Alcohol appears to have contributed to the incident, according to Troopers.
