ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) A pregnant polar bear chose an unusual place to den this winter, under a bridge and next to an active oil production facility.
The den was discovered in December on the industrial roadway to the Endicott Island Production Facility.
'For whatever reason this mother decided this would be a great place to den and she dug in next to road that was busy at the time she dug in,' says B.J. Kirschhoffer from Polar Bears International.
Hilcorp immediately closed the road, only allowing essential traffic to pass at five miles an hour, as any disturbance can cause a polar bear to abandon her den.
On March 18, the polar bear mom and her cub safely emerged from their unusual winter home and headed off into the bright spring sunshine.
